Geely Cars – Name & History

With official name being Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd., this Chinese automobile manufacturer is a subsidiary of Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. The company is headquartered in Hangzhou, China and serves around the world.

The company was founded in 1986 by Li Shufu. The company sells passenger cars under its own and Volvo brands, and taxis under The London Taxi brand. Geely acquired Volvo cars from Ford in 2010 and has owned The London Taxi Company since 2012.

The word “Geely” when translated to Mandarin Chinese means auspicious or lucky.

Range of Geely Car Models

As mentioned above, the company sells cars under two brands, one in its own name and other in the name of its Swedish Volco Cars subsidiary, Volvo.

The company introduced Xiali TJ7300-based cars in 1998 with HQ, Haoquing and Haoquing SRV. These were 1.0 L, 1.3 L, and 1.5 L hatchbacks, respectively. Other hatchbacks were introduced in 2000 in the names of MR and Merrie.

Year 2002 saw introduction of cars name MR, Uliou, and MS and in 2004 were introduced the PU, Rural Nanny, and Urban Nanny.

The company also introduced a 1.5 L coupe in 2002 in the name of Beauty Leopard. Geely also introduced a couple of Daewoo-designed cars in 2005, with one being a sedan in name of Freedom Cruiser and the other being a hatchback in the name of Geely.

Again, in 2006, the company introduced a couple of sedans named KingKong and Vision. Year 2008 saw introduction of a 1.8 CVVT coupe from the company in the name of China Dragon.

Other models from the company include Emgrand, which was introduced in 2009 as a medium to high-end luxury brand, with its trims as sedan and hatchbacks in different engine capacities.

In year 2010 was revealed Englon, which replaced the Shanghai Maple brand by the company. The company also brought in an entry-level brand in the name of Gleagle, which included models like Panda, GX2, CK, and GC7.
