The 2017 BMW X3 gives you the fun of driving and utility of a crossover. It is available in three turbocharged engine variants – ranging from 180 hp to 300 hp. The 8-speed automatic transmission is standard. The X3 is known for its smooth inline-six engine with great steering abilities. The downsides we found were the poor braking abilities. Furthermore, it may not strike you as a value-for-money car when you see the competitors. Anyhow, let’s check out the features and other things about the 2017 BMW X3.
Interior, Exterior, and Features
X3 has nice ground clearance at 8 inches and the drive can be a cakewalk in muddy, slushy, potholed roads. It has a length of 183.8 inches, width of 74.1 inches, and stands 66.1 inches tall with wheelbase of 110.6 inches. It comes under the segment of small sports utility vehicle, or crossover, with 2-wheel drive. It weighs just over 4,000 lbs.
Some of the noticeable external features include power auto-dimming side mirrors with power folding, fixed-interval wiper with defroster, speed-sensitive rain-detecting variable intermittent wipers with heated jets, lip spoiler, fully automatic projector beam halogen daytime running headlamps with delay-off, and perimeter lights.
The inside is nice and gives a fresh and upbeat feeling. The versatile rear seat is something you may like the most. It is spacious and can accommodate 5 decently-sized people easily. Some of the other interior features include power front bucket seats with 8-way power adjustable front seats and 2-way manual headrests, 40-20-40 folding bench front-facing fold-forward seatback rear seat, remote keyless entry with integrated key transmitter, illuminated entry and panic button, garage door transmitter, cruise control with steering-mounted controls, dual-zone front automatic air conditioning, HVAC includes underseat ducts and console ducts, illuminated locking glove box, SensaTec leatherette upholstery, day-night auto-dimming rearview mirror, fade-to-off interior lighting, cargo includes a cargo tray/organizer with lights, FOB controls for trunk and windows, perimeter alarm, engine immobilizer, and three 12v DC power outlets.
Entertainment and Infotainment
Trips, be they longer or shorter, are going to be fun in the 2017 BMW X3, for it will always keep you entertained and informed. You won’t get bored and you won’t get lost. Here are some of the entertainment and infotainment features in the X3. You get a systems monitor with trip computer, outside temperature gauge, and analog display. Other gauges include speedometer, odometer, engine coolant temp, tachometer, trip odometer, and trip computer.
In addition to this, you get a radio with anti-theft AM/FM stereo CD/MP3 player that includes Radio Data System (RDS). The radio comes with a seek-scan, clock and steering-mounted controls. Furthermore, you get wireless streaming, HD radio that includes multicast FM station reception, Radio BMW Professional, Hi-Fi sound system with 9 speakers and 205-watt digital amplifier, and satellite radio preparation with pre-wiring for SiriusXM satellite radio tuner. You also get added advantage of hands-free Bluetooth & USB audio connection with 1 LCD monitor in the front.
Engine and Performance
As mentioned before, the X3 comes in three different turbocharged engine variants, with base being a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesel producing 180 bhp. This trim proves to be quite economical but has less refinement. Other engine variants are 2.0-liter 4-cylinder producing 240 hp and 3.0-liter six-cylinder producing 300 bhp.
The 2.0-liter 4-cylinder produces max power of 240 bhp at 5,000 rpm and maximum torque of 260 lb-ft at 1,450 rpm. Rear-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic transmission (with manual shifting mode) are standard in X3.
The fastest trim (300 bhp) can reach from 0 mph to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and can touch top speed of 127 mph.
As mentioned above, there is available an economical trim that produces 180 bhp but it lacks refinement. Otherwise, the standard 240-bhp trim has an estimated highway fuel economy of 28 mpg. The 17.7-gallon fuel tank takes the highway cruising range to nearly 500 miles. The in-city fuel economy is estimated at 21 mpg, however.
As a vehicle with higher ground clearance, it can be considered safer when riding mud, slush, and potholes. However, as far as other safety features are concerned, there are all the standard ones included that you’ll find in crossovers of this segment.
Some of the safety features included in X3 worth mentioning here are 4-wheel disc brakes with 4-wheel ABS, front & rear vented discs, brake assist, hill descent control, hill hold control, electric parking brake, power auto-dimming side mirrors with power folding, fully automatic projector beam halogen daytime running headlamps with delay-off, front & rear fog lamps, DSC+ Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Roll Stability Control (RSC), ABS and Driveline Traction Control, side impact beams, dual-stage driver & passenger seat-mounted side airbags, BMW Assist eCall Emergency S.O.S., tire-specific low tire pressure warning, dual-stage driver & passenger front airbags, curtain 1st & 2nd row airbags, and airbag occupancy sensor.
Some of the optional safety packages are Driver Assistance Package, Driver Assistance Plus, Lighting Package, Adaptive Full LED Lights, and Surround View.

The 2017 BMW X3 is available in total 4 trims, with base price being around $40,000. The price range, however, goes up to $48,645 with no additional package included in the cost. Per experts, the buyers must consider the Dynamic Handling package when going for the 2017 BMW X3.
